Lottery employees and retailers work closely together to promote the games. Retailers are rewarded for their success in selling the tickets, and the lottery also provides them with demographic information to help optimize merchandising techniques. The New Jersey lottery launched a Web site during 2001 just for its retailers, which allows them to read about game promotions and ask questions of lottery officials online. The National Association of State Lottery Directors reports that as of 2003, there were about 186,000 retailers selling lottery tickets nationwide.
